THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS – April 11, 2025 – Lancium, LLC, a leading innovator in infrastructure and technology for integrating large scale data centers into the grid, announced today it has finalized an agreement to license a significant portfolio of patents to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) at no cost. This pioneering step enables broader participation of controllable loads and orchestrated resources within ERCOT’s market, bolstering grid reliability and fostering further innovation across Texas’s energy landscape.
The license, provided at no expense to ERCOT, addresses potential intellectual property barriers that may have previously limited the engagement of controllable load resources, and others, in the market. The arrangement, developed collaboratively, ensures ERCOT can sublicense these patents freely, thereby expanding market participation opportunities without risk of patent infringement disputes.
“This agreement exemplifies Lancium’s dedication to supporting grid stability and innovation across the ERCOT region,” said Michael McNamara, CEO of Lancium. “While these patents represent significant technological advancements, we believe that enabling ERCOT and its market participants to operate freely is more valuable for the long-term reliability and resilience of the Texas grid.”
The licensed patents, which are non-exclusive, perpetual, sublicensable, irrevocable, and royalty-free, encompass Lancium technologies that support the registration and operation of load resources in ERCOT’s market, particularly Controllable Load Resources (CLRs). This strategic decision positions ERCOT and market participants to confidently utilize cutting-edge technologies that enhance grid responsiveness and stability.
ERCOT Senior Vice President, Regulatory Policy, General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer, and Corporate Secretary, Chad Seely, highlighted the value of this collaboration, stating,
